The Upcycled Collection

Part of the mission at BeKinder Farm is to be as sustainable as possible and use every resource available to us to the fullest extent.  There are certain materials that are an essential part of daily farm life that might be thrown away by others, but we prefer to give these things a new purpose that aligns with our purpose.

For instance, animal feed bags— they are plastic, but they are already in existence and if we don’t find new purposes for this material, then it ends up in a landfill to pollute the ground and any runoff water. A feed bag can take anywhere from 20 to 1000 years to decompose, according to an article on disposabledesign.com. By transforming these bags into items like reusable shopping bags we can do a double good deed by using what is already here and not using more plastic shopping bags each grocery run. As someone who tries to avoid plastic exposure to my foods and skin for health reasons (autoimmune disease), I feel safe using these for food transport because (a) most foods are packaged, (b) even unpackaged produce will only be in the bag a limited time, and (c) the bag is meant to be worn or carried over clothing, so it isn’t in direct contact with skin for a prolonged time.

This collection has just begun, and we expect to come up with several more highly useful designs to reduce, reuse, and recycle what others may have sent to a landfill.
