When most people hear that we have bees, their minds automatically go straight to honey. But the bees have so much more to offer, including beeswax. The iconic wax comb produced by bees is truly precious. It takes four times a much energy and resources for bees to make than honey, but it is the basis of their whole world, so it's worth it. Beeswax has many positive benefits like honey, such as anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. The wax is non-toxic, biodegradable, and can form a protective barrier, making it ideal for use in body products, but also food storage.
Reusable Beeswax Wraps are a natural alternative to using plastic wrap, plastic baggies, and plastic bowls for food storage. Beeswax wraps are probably most associated with the bread-making community, as the wax wraps are ideal for covering sourdough starter jars, covering dough while it proves, and then for wrapping fresh bread for counter-top storage. The wraps provide a barrier against drying but breathe just enough to let out extra condensation that would normally build up inside of a plastic bag that would cause bread to go moldy very quickly. This same concept makes beeswax wraps popular for wrapping cheeses as well.
Our beeswax wraps are made of 100% cotton fabric infused with a mixture of beeswax, pine resin, and jojoba oil. Often wraps made with just beeswax can dry and crack relatively quickly with use. The addition of organic jojoba oil helps the wraps stay more flexible and supple for longer. Pine resin is added to the mixture to give the wraps a little bit of tack/stickiness to adhere to the edges of bowls, plates, and glasses and stick to itself as well. When you are done using the wrap around a particular item, you simply use cool soapy water to rinse off anything that may have stuck to the wrap, rinse with cool water, dry the wrap, and fold it up to store until you want to use it again. Beeswax wraps can be good for up to 2 years of use and whenever it reaches the end of its usefulness, the wrap can be composted.
Our beeswax wraps are offered in 4 sizes currently-- 5"x5", 8"x8", 12"x12", and 17"x 21". Wraps either be used to quickly cover an item or can be folded into different sized pouches for different purposes.
